Current Events Journal: We will start writing entries for a current events journals that will be due at the end of the trimester. Each Friday I will post a link for the article for “Current Events and Opinion” link on my webpage. For instance, our first current event assignment will be October 10, 2014. On that day, a link for the article due will be posted on the Homework page, and on October 17, the link for the current event assignment for the next week will be posted. It is your responsibility to read the article posted for each week and write a two part response to the article. I will not print off articles for students.
First, you will describe the claim, or primary argument, of the article in a well-developed paragraph. You MUST support your argument for the claim with details from the article. Specifically, you must QUOTE parts of the article in order to support your argument for the claim. This first paragraph must contain the parts of a paragraph that we will review in class: namely, a claim, supporting evidence, reasoning that supports the claim, and a concluding statement.
Second, you will respond to the argument of the article. Do you agree with the author? Why, or why not? If you agree with the author, what specifically in his or her argument and article appeals to you? If you do not support the author, of what specifically in his or her argument and article do you disapprove? This response also must be written in the form a paragraph with a claim, supporting evidence/arguments, and a concluding statement.
***Remember: a strong paragraph has six to ten sentences.***
I will expect the current event response to improve throughout the semester as we practice writing paragraphs. You should keep a specific document on your iPad where you will keep you work. On occasion, I will ask you to turn it in using eBackpack.
